Letter from Mrs. William Harris to Dorothea Goldberg
- 1969
"My ancestry is prove back to BENJAMIN RAWLINGS b. ca
1776 in Brunswick Co., VA, and' married to Miner Wilkes. dtr. of Joseph Wilkes.
I am not sure of BENJAMIN'S father. However, just this week I received a DAR
record for a HENRY RAWLINGS who died in 1807 in Hancock Co., Georgia, and who
had among other children a son named BENJAMIN of Brunswick Co., VA. Since I
find only one BENJAMIN RAWLINGS in that county, this HENRY must be my ancestor.
I also have the will of WILLIAM RAWLINGS, probated in Brunswick Co. in 1787,
naming, among others, a son named HENRY. I feel that this HENRY is surely the
same person as the HENRY RAWLINGS who died in Hancock Co., Georgia. He was born
ca 1750, so his father WILLIAM would be barn ca 1725. Obviously much more work
needs to be done."
NB: Please note Mrs. Goldberg is guessing, which is not the
thing to do in genealogy.
(Letter from Mrs. Harrison one month later)
Dear Mrs. Goldberg:
My RAWLINGS line is beginning to shape up better now. I have
proven ancestry back to WILLIAM RAWLINGS b. ca 1725, married to Naomi with a
large family of sons named HENRY, JOHN, RICHMOND, RHESE/REECE and WILLIAM
JR.... plus 5 daughters. I think it would take a lot of research in England to
really verify these claims."
