In answer to your Editor's request for information (in the September issue) concerning the possible relationship between ASAHEL RAWLINGS and a son MICHAEL, we received a note from Ted Peck, as follows:

"I don't know of a MICHAEL but Nancy (Pendergast) and ASAHEL RAWLINGS had a son named MOSES. This evidence is from a court case in Knox County, Indiana, and was brought to light by my daughter, Katherine Koustmer, and by a friendly researcher in the Vincennes, Indiana, Library. ASAHEL and Nancy were in Knox County, Indiana in 1807 with their then 22 year old son MOSES. ASAHEL died, and seven years later MOSES was in court for not having paid ASAHEL's bills. The following was provided the court as evidence:

January 1807 - a copy of MOSES ROLLINGS account against a Mr. Elliott Wilson.

January 1814 - Elliott Wilson to MOSES ROLLINGS, Debtor

To 1 saddle - $10.00

To House, Room and Bording (sic)

It seems that in January of 1807 moneys were owned for boarding his wife and child for eight months $40. Testified to also by J.B. Dresanin of Knox County.

This was also presented:

July 1814 - Knox County, Indiana Territory, recorded note - "MOSES ROLLINGS to Elliott Wilson, to Boarding and nursing ASALE (sic) ROLLINGS, deceased. Eight days who died in that time at my house and was buried at my expense for which I charge twenty-five dollars. To washing and boarding of $6.00 plus $5.50 paid to A. Ramsey for ASALE (sic) ROLLINGS - Total: $36.50.

NANCY RAWLINGS was subpoenaed to testify:

June 20, 1814, Knox Co. Courts "Subpoena NANCY ROLLINGS and John Courtwright to appear before me at my office on Saturday, the second day of July, to give evidence in a suit depending wherein Elliot Wilson is plaintiff and MOSES ROLLINGS is defendant."

Testimony of Aquillar Ramsey:

Q. - "Did you not hear Mr. ROLLINGS say that he would see all his father's debts paid?"

A. - I heard Mr. MOSES ROLLINGS say that he would settle all his father's business that was unsettled in this county.

MOSES was found by the jury to be responsible for payment of the debt.

MOSES subsequently married three times. He had one child in Indiana, CRAWFORD RAWLINGS. In 1829 he sold his land in Indiana and moved across the Wabash River to Gallatin Co., Illinois, where he established a farm. He and his then wife JANE had three children in Illinois, ELLENDER, FRANCES and JOB, before he died Sept. 15, 1838 in his 54th year.
