The book "50 Simple Things You Can Do To Save Your Life" has recently been compiled by a group of health experts. It is perhaps surprising to find that the #1 recommendation is 'discover your medical roots'. They feel it is crucial to know about the health of your family your siblings, parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents and great-grandparents, because some diseases run in families. Breast and ovarian cancer for women...prostate cancer for men ... colitis, Crohn's Disease, stroke & heart attacks, diabetes, and other forms of cancer such as pancreatic, kidney, liver and colon. Asthma is another, and bronchial and lung problems as well.

Discovering such a family history does not mean you automatically will fall prey to it but knowing your medical roots is a powerful incentive for getting periodic check-ups with that problem in mind. Bookstores and libraries have many source-books. Bantam is publishing "If It Runs In Your Family"...and the Genealogical Publishing Co. in Baltimore has an excellent summary by Myra Vanderpool Gormley... "Family Diseases: Are You At Risk". Think about it.

One of our subscribers whose husband is now being treated for prostate cancer wrote to ask me to put in a reminder to regrind our men folk to be tested regularly for that disease. It's simple and painless, so follow her advice. Your editor seconds that suggestion.
