We've recently received from Katherine Koustmer same material on the RANKIN family. For those descendants of NATHAN RAWLINGS (1750-1821), drop me a line and I'll send a copy to you. Very interesting and with a lot of information connecting the RANKINS to the RAWLINGS.

Charlotte Kunold writes again to tell of an interesting letter she received after her inquiry. It's from a WILLIAM T. RAWLINS of Long Beach, CA. He says his family is Afro-American, and that his great-grandmother was a slave, born in North Carolina. She was of African and Native American descent. He said a lot of freed slaves went on to Kansas to settle. His grandmother in Kentucky married an African-American named JAMES RAWLINS and they lived in Kansas. He was a well-digger and died from inhaling methane gas which he said comes from the wood which is burned in the digging process. Then WILLIAM RAWLINS described to Charlotte some of the slaves' lives and treatment. He told Charlotte he figures his ancestry is White, Afro-American and Native American - and considers himself and his family True Americans.

Another letter came from a Lena F. Day of Grove City, Ohio. Her line began with CHARLES CECLAY RAWLINS, b. 1861; d. 1923; and Sara Jane Garey Apr. 19, 1865. She died in 1935. These were Lena's grandparents.

In correspondence with a BOB RAWLINS of Lincoln, Illinois she found that his grandfather was b. in Ky in the 1830's; and his father was born in TX in 1895. Both father-and grandfather's name was JOSEPH R. RAWLINS.
