R/RFHA Newsletter, December 1994                 P. 45

(continued)

There were a lot of ministers in the ROLLINS family. There is an old bible in Mr. Powell's family printed in 1832, which is believed to have belonged to Rev. GREGORY RAWLINGS/ROLLINS. These are listed in the back of that book: Rev. LEWIS P. ROLLINS, son of Rev. GREGORY; Rev. Wm. G. ROLLINS- Rev. WILLIAM ROLLINS; and Rev. William Lunn. Rev. William J. Lunn was a blind preacher and the son of Margaret Goodson and William J. Lunn Sr., who was her first husband before she married Rev. LEWIS P. ROLLINS.

Editor's note: The facts are not certain on items I, II and III of the above as so many of the records were destroyed during the Revolutionary War in Surry County.

From Elke A. Hall, 500 Tabb Lakes Drive, Yorktown, VA 23693-4127

ANTHONY RAWLINGS was born (place: and date unknown); died Bedford Co. VA, 1773. An inventory of his estate can be found in Bedford Co. records. An ANTHONY RAWLINGS is recorded in 1716 in Westmoreland Co., VA, which might indicate there was a relationship with the Bedford Co. family.

ANTHONY married a Mary (last name unknown) and had the following children: BENJAMIN, b. ca 1755; MARY b. ca 1760 and md. Oct. 23,1780 in Bedford Co. one William Ely; ELIZABETH b. ca 1763 and md. Oct. 2, 1786 to Joseph Benjey (she died after 1820 in Harland Co., KY); JOHN, ANN, SARAH b. 1765 and md. ca 1779 David Hall (she died in spring of 1838). BENJAMIN's will is recorded in Bedford Co. Dec. 20, 1776 and proved May 26, 1777. He named his mother Ann (could her name have been Mary Ann?), his sister ANN and his brother JOHN.

Later information on ELIZABETH and Joseph Benjey can be found in Lee Co., VA records where the couple moved ca 1792 before proceeding on to Kentucky where they eventually settled in Harlan Co. He became sheriff there in 1842. It seemed that the Ely family into which MARY RAWLINGS married were Quakers as the ceremony is recorded in Quaker records.

Editor's note: There is further information concerning the Westmoreland Co., VA RAWLINGS which someone might wish to look into in order to find a connection to this Bedford Co. Family.
