The WILKES family of Brunswick Co., Virginia in the late 1700's married often into the RAWLINGS family of that same county. For example Joseph Wilkes Jr's daughter Julia Gillion, b. 1804, married HARTWELL RAWLINGS in 1820 in that county. They had 5 children: JULIA, MARY, JOSEPH, EDWIN and IDA. The family later moved to Fayette Co., Tennessee. HEARTWELL. RAWLINGS (the name) appeared in several generations of the WILLIAM RAWLINGS line of that county.

 

Even earlier MINAH WILKES (b.1778), married BENJAMIN RAWLINGS Jan. 24, 1799, in Brunswick County - surety Herbert Hill; witnesses Thomas Wilkes and John Fowlkes. They were married by Rev. Aaron Brown, Methodist. Issue were:

HENRIETTA b. ca 1801, Brunswick Co.; married Gray Finch, had 7 children, moved to Fayette County, Tennessee.

FRANCES, married Edgcomb Suggett in Brunswick County, had 6 children.

ROBERT, born ca 1807; m. Mary D. Peebles in 1827 IN Brunswick Co. Their children were JOSEPH W. who served in the Civil War, BASSETT, ANNE E., JAMES, ROBERT, MARY J., CHARLES, HENRY C. and GEORGIA M.

JOSEPH W. m. Martha A.G.Harris in 1837, and their children were: AMANDA JANE, HENRIETTA VIRGINIA, WILLIAM MORTIMER, ROBERT SARKIN, JOHN JOSEPH, MAY LOUISA and PHILIP HENRY.

GEORGE B., b.ca 1817, m. Nancy F. Howell, daughter of Spencer Howell, in 1837 in Brunswick County.

WILLIAM, m. Nancy C., and had children: WILLIAM A., CARY, PHILLIP H., ROSA A., JANE S., JOHN, CHRISTIANA A., JOHN L., RICHARD and HORACE H.

ELIZABETH F. married Jesse M. Taylor in 1822.

RANDOLPH (nothing else known.)

MARTHA A. m. Rev. NICHOLAS RAWLINGS her cousin, in 1839.

Wed. July 27,1748 #170 - A mare strayed from the plantation of William Hunt, formerly owned by AARON RAWLINGS in Anne Arundel County). Deliver to Capt. John Carpenter in Annapolis. (P.50)

Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1748 #190 - Gov. Ogle has appointed the following Justices of the Peace in Frederick County: N. Wickham Jr.... Wm. Griffith ... JOHN RAWLINGS ... Thomas Owens... Thomas Cresap ... Thomas Batty..Joseph Chaplain ... Henry Munday ... Thomas Prather ... George Gordon-and Joseph Ogle. John Darnall is appointed Clerk of the County; John Thomas is High Sheriff, and Isaac Brook, surveyor. (P.55)

Wednesday, Dec.28, 1748 #192 - Vachel Denton, living on the North side of Severn, has for sale the plantation belonging to William Hung, Esq., merchant in London. It is "RAWLINGS' Plantation" in Anne Arundel County between South River and Kilkenny Warehouses. (P.78)

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 1750 #285 - William Cumming, Annapolis, has land for sale in Frederick County on Senecar Creek near JUSTICE RAWLINGS' plantation. (P.78) Thursday, June 24, 1756 #581 - Ship arrivals: Ship Severn, Capt. JEHOSOPHAT RAWLING from London.

Capt. JEHOSOPHAT RAWLINGS arrived in Severn River last Friday from London. He brings news of the death of the Hon. Edmund Jennings, Esq., late of this-place. He died at Bath. He was a lawyer and for many years Maryland's Council of State.

(no date noted) FRANCIS RAWLINGS, living near the head of the South River, has goods for sale at Mr. Jacques Warehouse in Annapolis. They were imported in the ship Unity by Capt. Joseph Richardson.
