R/RFHA Newsletter - June 1992 P. 20
From a
privately published. book "To the Memory of LEE ROLLINS and wife, Susan
Penn” compiled from family records and history by the youngest and only living
member of the old Clay County, Missouri, family - a copy of which can be found
in the Kansas City, Missouri, Library, 311 East 12th St., Kansas City, MO 64106
Submitted by Stan Rawlings, 1307 W. Broadway, Columbia, MO 65203.
LEE
ROLLINS was the 6th and last child of JOSHUA ROLLINS/RAWLIN(G)S of Maryland.
JOSHUA came from Maryland to Kentucky when the latter was a new country. He
entered a large tract of land in Bourbon County, near Paris. He owned a large
number of slaves and developed his farm, becoming prosperous. His first wife
was Verlinda Darnall, by whom he had 3 children: SUSANNAH, ANNA and LLOYD.
After the death of their mother, the two girls were sent to their relatives in
Maryland, but LLOYD was raised by his step-mother, Mary Sophia Kennedy.
JOSHUA
married Mary Sophia in Kentucky. She was the daughter of Dr. John Kennedy, who
fought in the Revolutionary War, was a native of Maryland, served under Gen.
Nathaniel Greene, was taken prisoner at the Battle of Guilford Court House in
North Carolina, March 15, 1781. He was placed on the old Jersey Prison Ship,
where he died of starvation. His wife was Esther Stille/Stilly, daughter of
Peter Stilly. John and Esther had 7 children, Mary Sophia being the youngest.
John Kennedy was half-brother to the Revolutionary War Hero Daniel Kennedy.
It should be noted here, as well, that the Darnall family also intermarried with the RAWLINGS of Maryland, particularly those descendants of AARON RAWLINGS (1667-1741). Some believe that SARAH, daughter of STEPHEN and granddaughter of AARON, was the wife of the Revolutionary war hero Daniel Kennedy.
By Mary
Sophia, JOSHUA had 3 more children: SISLEY, DORCAS and LEE. SISLEY, born Jan.
30, 1798, m. Littleberry Bedford April 24, 1817, and by him had 7 children.
DORCAS, b. Oct. 13, 1799, married her cousin Nicholas Talbott Jr. the same day
as her sister married Mr. Bedford. They had no children and nothing more is
known of her. (To further confuse family matters, Nicholas Talbott Sr.
was Mary Sophia's brother-in-law, having married her sister Aria. He was also
named co-guardian of JOSHUA'S 3 children by Mary Sophia.) LEE was born Feb. 12,
1801, and died July 19, 1854. He married Susan Penn March 8, 1821. She was born
March 28, 1805, and died Sept. 16, 1869. Her father was Joseph Penn, and her
mother was his 2nd wife Charolotte Aker. (Further note: It is known that Joseph
Penn's first wife was a daughter of Daniel Kennedy, grandson of the war hero.)
LEE and Susan Penn ROLLINS had 14 children.
Born in
Bourbon County, Kentucky, and his
siblings lost their father in 1801. By his will, JOSHUA gave guardianship of
his first three children to his brothers-in-law, Thomas Darnall and William
Foreman; and guardianship of his last three children to his second wife Mary
Sophia and her brother-in-law, Nicholas Talbott. Thus relatives were in charge
of the affairs, education, etc., of their orphaned relations. (A copy of this
will is in the R/RFHA files should anyone be interested. Send a stamped,
self-addressed envelope for the typed transcript.)
