From Carol Henkel, 214 Four Knot Lane, Osprey, FL 34229

Copy of a letter written April 26, 1887, from Georgetown, Scott Co., Kentucky. It was written to a Mr. CARROLL RAWLINGS, great-grandfather to Carol Henkel. CARROLL RAWLINGS was the only son of LEROY RAWLINGS, a son of an AARON RAWLINGS and his wife Hettie T.

"Dear Sir:

Your very kind and polite letter came duly to hand, and I assure you it would give me comfort to answer your request, for I have long desired a more extended knowledge of the RAWLINS family. The genealogy of the family with its varied orthography is perhaps unique. No doubt (I think) the original orthography is RAWLINS. Until recently the family seems to have manifested little interest for each other. I could no doubt give you many isolated names, but could not connect them so as to be satisfactory to you. To supply my deficiency or defect, please permit me to refer you to an octavo volume of 348 well-written pages, published in 1874 by JOHN R. ROLLINS of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

He will be pleased no doubt to furnish you with a copy (of) his book - price is $2.25 per copy. You will find him just such a man as you will be pleased to meet. My father's name was CHARLES, son of WALTER RAWLINS of London, England, (who) came to America, settled in Sussex Co., Delaware, and died in 1812, aged 63. I am his fourth son, born 2 February, 1800. In 1828, Feb. 4, I married miss Gabriella Jones with whom I lived 59 years less 8 days in every comfort that man can enjoy. If God ever made a help-meet suitable for man, mine was to me. Please pardon my weakness with this digression for my eyes are now in tears, and my heart in sorrow. You see what depth of shade is on my 87 years.

Hoping that the present and future enjoyment of life is yours, please accept my kindest regards for yourself and family.

Very truly yours,

James RAWLINS

PS Pardon errors.”

Editor's Note: See P. 51 for CHARLES RAWLINS of England Lineage. You will note his fourth son, born Feb. 2, 1800, was named for himself, CHARLES.
