The
Rawlin(g)s Rollin(g)s Family History Association
Volume 2, No. 3 September 1989
Dear cousins:
You will
probably note that the content of this quarter's Newsletter is down to 12
pages. This is because we have included the Index to Volume I 1988, which
brings the total page count to 16 as usual. The Index was a task we kept
putting off until (1) we figured out a way to present it which would be of post
benefit to the members/subscribers; and (2) we were able to find the time to
actually sit down and do it. As the instructions for use point out, the
decision was made to use only first names, since the spellings of the surname
varied, even for the same person. Next we named the state in which the person
lived at that time. Then it was a question of how much space par line it would
take to write "Vol. 1, Issue 2" plus the year of publication, plus
page number. We chose to go with a code, and made it as easy as possible to
use, we hope. Here's how it works: since the months of publication have
different first letters, those letters were chosen, i.e..."M" for
March, "J" for June, "S" for September, and "D"
for December, followed by the year, in this case "88" for 1988. The
last figure in the code is, the page number in that issue. Therefore,' to find
AMMON RAWLINGS, for example: his name is listed alphabetically, then the area
where he is found, followed by the issue date and page number where this
information can be located. AMMOM from Tennessee is found in the September 1988
issue, P.2 (S88-2). I hope this is satisfactory to you all. The 1989 Index will
be completed for the March 1990 issue.
We
received notice of 12 lost June newsletters, either having not been received at
all or only part of it received. This has sustained the Editor's belief that
the Newsletter is safest mailed in an envelope. If any of you failed to receive
that issue, let us know at once and we will send it to you.
Although
we've picked up 6 new members since June, we have had to delete 19 from this
issue since we haven't received their $5 subscription fee. We are sorry about
that but we work on an extremely tight budget and it can't be helped. By the
way, along that line, we've been receiving inquiry letters about the
organization from people wanting to know our charges for a Query letter. We've
taken it upon ourselves to ask $1.00 fee for a Query letter from a
non-subscriber, plus postage when we send that person a copy of the Newsletter
in which it appears. Judging by the amounts other Associations charge, it's
still a giveaway. Let me know your thoughts on the subject.
We
received a very complimentary review-of our Newsletter in the
"Scribe", published by Car-Del Publications of Maryland, which
gladdened our hearts. Here is part of it: "Here are primary source
records, family news, and research tips, plus pages of queries in a quantity
which is unmatched by many larger organizations . And the magazine's size, layout
and print-quality are also equal to that of many older publications."
Thanks to you who contribute, our publication is a success, even to
non-Rawlin(g)s/Rollin(g)s! Keep up the good work!
