In the Baltimore Sun, June 4, 1905, a letter was quoted from "A Descendant" concerning the founder of the Spotsylvania County, VA, RAWLINS.

"JAMES RAWLINGS, founder of the old Ellangowan home in Spottsylvania Co., Virginia, was an Englishman, born 1715, died December 3, 1784; married on Oct.4, 1738, Sarah Holladay, etc." And he adds that this couple had 12 children - ELIZABETH, JAMES, MARTHA, JOHN, SARAH, MARY, AGNES, BENJAMIN, RICHARD, THOMAS, JOSEPH and REBECCA. But the records of Spotsylvania County show that JAMES RAWLINS was a witness to a will of James Coffey dated April 1, 1728. As a person must be aged 21 to be a legal witness to a will, the JAMES born 1715 was not the JAMES wed to Sarah Holladay. The JAMES old enough to be a witness to a will died in 1757, leaving a will dated April 9 of that year which was probated June 9, 1757. In this will this JAMES names his son JAMES and daughters HANNAH Himber, MARTHA Gaines and ELIZABETH Holladay, wife of John Holladay. The son mentioned in this will JAMES JR. married Sarah Holladay, his cousin, daughter of JOHN HOLLADAY, and it was this couple who had the 12 children, above named.

Further, JAMES Jr.'s will was dated November 15, 1781, probated April 5, 1785, names 8 children..BENJAMIN, THOMAS, JOSEPH, JAMES, JOHN and daughter MARY Gains, AGNES Gains and REBECCA. Further, it is believed the original JAMES (d.1757) came first to Maryland from England pre-1700, settling first in Prince George's County, then moving to King William County, VA pre-1720. Both Caroline and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia were formed in 1720 from Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties.
